No bass yesterday but caught this toothy dinosaur (longnose gar) pitching a Baby D Bomb to some shallow wood.

A longnose gar is more like a Cajun pickerel or pike. 😉

The real Cajun muskie is the alligator gar...tried to land one once that was all of four+ feet on 10# line and a spinning rod. Had the bright idea of trapping it between my boat and the shore of the bayou so I could save my crankbait. As soon as it was in shallow water it began flopping furiously and broke the line. 😳

Told my wife the catfish were biting, so she asked me to catch some for her for the next fry…

Mission Accomplished!

After waiting all day on my wife to get home, we went and got a Christmas tree. I had from 5-6 pm to fish after we set it up. I drove directly to my offshore SMb grounds and started fishing. Not much luck so I sat down at the console just letting the boat drift along the edge of a drop off and watched the graph to see if I was close enough. A crappie must have gotten lost and ended up out there, I got a funny picture of the screen after I caught it . You can see where I pulled it straight up off the bottom. No skunk and a pretty evening

It's as dark as the bottom of coal mine here by that time of day.

Eastern time zone for the win

conversely, when we camped on an island in Lake superior this summer, we went to watch the sunset every night and it took till like 10:45 PM to see it. Granted, I don’t think we ever figured out which time zone we were on, I think it was Eastern, but the ferry operated on central time

Finally got out surf fishing for the first time in a while the other day. . Got to the spot on S. Ponte Vedra bch. at sunup. Put out 3 rods and immediately got a bluefish. Fished 4 hours and the only other fish I caught was , of all things, a needlefish. I cut him up and used him on my biggest combo for a shark or redfish, with no results.

The weather was great, but the bites were almost non existent . I grew up fishing there , and usually do pretty good. This is one of the worst days Ive ever had there, fishing wise anyway…

I think the lack of current and the sw wind messed things up.

Love connecting with bluefish. Totally worth the fight. Unfortunately they show up sporadically in Southern Maine. I’d have to pull the boat out of the bay and head south for a state or 2.

Other species wrap up.

I caught this Channel Cat on a Bellows Gill. I have no idea how heavy it was. It was bigger than 30 inches.

Son caught a nice stocker rainbow. He prefers bass!

Swimbait wipers. They fight harder than anything I have caught in freshwater other than a Steelhead. Impressive.

First tuna trip for the winter went well.  Landed some nice ones, but lost some cows.  We also landed a sailfish, and one dorado.  Hope to get back out before the bite stops, but not sure if that will happen.

Well...... That didn't work out like I'd planned/hoped. 🤦‍♂️ The past two years, the week after Thanksgiving was the best week of the year for the A-rig bite. So... This year I scheduled a week vacation for it. We had an Arctic blast blow through last week, and I figured the crashing temps would have 'em putting the feedbags on. NOPE!!!  😂 It shut 'em down. I couldn't get bit on live or dead crappie or shad, let alone lures. I'm talking 2-3 dozen fish per day coming up and looking at my baits, often for several minutes, then swimming off without touching them.

I fished 8 of 10 days, a few with highs in the 20's, got blown off the lake for 2, and took 7 strait skunkings. Grrr... Today is my last day of vacation and I was blessed with a bit of redemption. I went 2 for 3. I bagged a 37" on a live  gizzard shad, a 36" on the rig, and lost a mid 40's on a live shad. That one stung. Time is running short and I'm still 7 fish shy of the century mark. Looking like I'll get to fish three days next week, so it ain't over yet. 🤞

Not biggins, but they're a couple of beautiful fall fatties.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I have nine days off remaining this year. If the forecast holds, the lake should remain open through December. The surface temp is currently at 40, and we have another cold front coming through the next few days. I expect the bite to remain tough, but there will be opportunities.

I actually wondered if the lakes freeze over there or not during a normal winter.

Obviously last winter was a very mild one so they presumably didn’t even come close there.

Yeah, most years they freeze over in late December or early January, and thaw in March. Last year we only had ice for a couple weeks in Jan.

We were also ice free in February of 2024. Crazy.

Isn't that interesting.  The northern tier has their mildest, snowless winter in my lifetime and the southern tier has the coldest in nearly 30 years.

Most of our lakes are at least partially frozen over here now.  Some bigger, more open lakes have open water still though.

Its funny, I kinda feel the same way in the summer when its nasty hot/humid out.  I think "the south can take this weather back."
