That's just one of the best movies ever made to me it's too modern to be a western.

If it's a western than we must also consider Hell or Highwater

It is absolutely a western and so is hell or high water. Both are films that take place in or around the desert and they revolve around people taking money that doesn't belong to them and get hunted down.

My vote doesn't change.

I can accept that, but as its own category "neo western" or something.

Part of the western genre was the lawlessness that went on before the west was truly settled.   Tombstone is the perfect representation for that in regard to time period.

Lonesome Dove

There are a LOT of movies tied for second, but the best western of all time is the 1960 American interpretation of the 1954 Japanese epic "Seven Samurai".  If you know what American movie this is, we may be friends already.

And number 1 1/2 is Big Jake.

I'm not much into westerns, but 'The Magnificent Seven' is one I'll watch.

The original - not the 2016 remake.

The Outlaw Josey Wales.

I don't think it's the top, but I really like "The Cowboys". They may not be considered a western, The Outlaw Jose Wales and Jeremiah Johnson.

Unforgiven and Pale Rider are my 1&2. Brian.

Shane with Allan Ladd. I've loved the gunfight scene for over 50 years.

The original True Grit.  The shootout near the end was epic.

This is not getting settled.  But it's lining up a ton of movie nights.
