Who doesn’t use senkos?

Featured Replies

I know a few guys around me that refuse to use em because it’s all anyone seems throw around these parts. I’ve caught some good fish on em but there always seems to be a better option

You will all be relieved to hear that I'm willing to accept donations of any unused senkos you have, and are feeling too insecure or embarrassed to use.

I fished a weightless worm for about two solid years, and that was all I threw.  I'd tie on a Senko when they wouldn't bite a YUM Dinger.

At some point I got tired of fishing them and hardly tie on a weightless plastic of any kind now.

So me then.

I almost never use them. In fact, this year marked the first time I’ve ever thrown an actual Yamamoto…all of 3 casts haha.

I've had a few packs but currently go through Dingers by the dozens . I think they are the best wood pitching baits I have used. I rig them with a  1/4 or 5/16th oz weight , so the slow  wiggle of a weightless senko is not what I'm after.

This year I mostly donated them to my son for weightless worming in the spring.  He caught a couple good ones with them.

I used them in the dog days of summer this year (4") with pegged weights to get reactions bites when they weren't hitting anything.

I assume I'll use them in the winter some when working ledges and drops.

It's not usually what I reach for first but I'm never without some stick baits because they catch fish and are efficient to present in awkward places.

It has been several years since I've used one. I don't enjoy fishing with them, and the last time I did I gut hooked a fish (weightless wacky rig) and he became dinner. Other people can do what they want, but I'm not a fan.

I’ve never used one.  I made my own worms until I discovered Elaztech.  That is the only worm I use.

Not quite Ned Rig or Drop Shot level of fishing, but pretty close.

Always makes me nervous fishing with them whacky rigged which is the only way I fish them.    I won't fish them outside the Spring.   Too many better options for me.

That said, the first half of the Elite Series was seemingly won on a whacky worm.  It cashes big time checks that's for sure.

Mine have gone to the never use box, too boring.

I fish with the BPS Stiko and Yum Dinger, usually in the 3 or 4 inch size.  Where I'm fishing determines if I use them or not.

Its probably been at least 10 yrs since I've used any Senkos.

i have one color from yamamoto that caught fire for me last year but it hasn't been the same since. tried it for the first time this year today and nada. probably gonna retire that one for a while. I did pull one out of a gullet today though, got some color insight out of that.

What's a Senko?   I'll reluctantly use a Bizz Baits "sassy stick", or a wacky rigged Zoom trick worm if the bite is really slow.   I haven't stooped to ned rigs and drop shot's yet.   Earlier this spring, the only time I've been to a lake this year with smallmouth a guy told me the only way to catch them was with a ned rig.   I caught a 4 pounder on a bladed jig while he was still close enough to see.

I do occasionally use a senko for Carolina rigging or a shaky head.  In the event that you see me wacky rigging one you can rest assured that I’m not only having a bad day but more than likely I have zeroed for more outings than I care to admit.

Haven’t used a Senko in over 20 years, and the only other stickbaits I use are ZinkerZ cut in half for Ned rigging ?

Okay, I gotta ask, why all the hate for senkos?  I thought they were a staple bait for bass fishing.  Please don’t beat me up too much ?

IF I ever feel the need to throw a stick bait, I’d much rather use a Lil General, but there are almost always better options

Bunch of darn liars up in here. ?

JK. I use them (mostly wacky) but usually in a 'break glass in case of emergency' situation.

There's nothing says 'serious bass fisherman' more than a fire tiger double Colorado blade spinnerbait with a chartreuse curly tail grub on the back ?????????

I think stick baits are just another type of soft plastic.  They work sometimes.   Worms are fun to fish.  Not really a whole lot more to it.  Plenty of times I can't buy a bite with a stick bait and plenty of times I can.  It's just a tool I reckon.  I feel like they cast nicely on account of being rather torpedo shaped.  That's ultimately my favorite thing about them.

Not hate from me outside of the fact I don't like the chances of gut hooking fish whacky rigged, and if you watch the Elite Series guys, they gut hook them as well with it.

They also tend to litter waters given how soft and easy to throw off the hook they are.  Studies have shown fish will eat plastics off the bottom.

Most importantly for myself though if I'm being honest is that they just aren't very much fun to fish with.    You don't get that intense hookset satisfaction like on jig/free rig/t rig/etc., you don't get to work it like a jerkbait or big swimbait, you can't cover tons of water like with a crank/spinnerbait/chatterbait, and obviously it isn't a topwater.

Again with all that said, the Elite Series Big Bass of the year will likely be a 9.2 caught by Christie at Lay Lake earlier this year on a whacky rig.    The current AOY leader Cobb has built his career and this year's run at AOY on the whacky rig.      It's a serious bait that has perhaps caught more Bass than any other lure besides a curly tailed plastic worm.
