Where did the old timers go?

Recommended Posts

Here's my $0.02.  In every sport, or line of effort, the old move out the way, the young move in.

Johnny Unitas, Ken Stabler, Bart Starr, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Willie Mays, Roland Martin, Larry Nixon, Kevin VanDam and thousands of others, including the author (77), have gotten old and are no longer competitive in their field.  Heck, I was an Ironworker in my youth.  No more.  It's natural, the way it's supposed to be.

In fishing right now, maybe FFS is accelerating the change, but a lot of young studs were taking over long before FFS.

It was never about 250hp and 100K boats. It's fishing. 12 years ago I got flack, here and elsewhere, paying $50K for a boat. That's cheap by today's standards. The boat didn't make me a better fisherman. It did make the labor burden to fish, much easier. I'm in a $400 boat now. In the next year or 2, I'm planning to be in a 6 figure boat and it still won't make me a better fisherman. It's just fishing. The boat does not make the fisherman.

Pic is from a year ago this time. I'm hoping to take him out this weekend and this is what the sport is all about.

For us, boating has always been a family affair.  My wife and I started fishing together in high school.  We brought our son fishing with us when he could barely carry a rod. We had little car top boats, 40' sport fish and everything in between.  The price of your boat and tackle has nothing to do with how good a fisherman you are.

What I fear is young people will think they need to spend a fortune to be good at catching bass.  Truth is, I know fishermen who can catch more bass off the bank than 50% of the TV pros.  When I moved to Central Florida, I had more money than many of the locals. I bought a 20' Gambler and started fishing local tournaments.  Those local fishermen humbled me.  I quickly learned that throwing money at bass wasn't going to get me anywhere.  My offshore friends back in Miami think bass fishing is laughable. To spend $100K for a boat and tackle to catch 15" fish is a joke because their bait is bigger than our fish.  In order to appreciate bass fishing, you had to have grown up with it.  My young memories of bass fishing aren't filled with computer screens and power poles.

Real bass fishing is not what it looks like on TV.  It's a contest of wills between you an the fish.  It's about the sky at sunrise, the smell of spring in the air and the sound of the water.  It's about the look of a bass when you hold it in your hands. You don't need a $100K worth of stuff to enjoy that.

For sure, Capt. Phil, that's what bass fishing is to you and me and many others at Bass Resource, but there are also others who believe that bass fishing is greatly about a bass boat and FFS. I don't even know if FFS would work where I fish, where there are weeds atop weeds. I know for sure that I'll never drag a battery and screen across a field or carry it through the woods.

And I know that anticipation might be what I love most about bass fishing and that my favorite moment might be when I launch, in the drizzling, foggy dark, and cast into that uncertainty. I know @Zcokerknows this thrill. So do @T-Billy and many others who are on the water when all sensible folks are still cozy in their jammies.

I have shared many times that some mornings, I don't even target big bass, that I'll go to a pond simply because I don't want the pursuit of big bass to interfere with being grateful for everything else that's beyond yonder.

Amen, brother. I shared in another thread how I arranged to buy an old canoe. I don't even know the maker because all its identifiers have been taken by time. That canoe is all I'll need to catch hundreds of bass. I'll leave it at the waterfront property I just bought and go walking through the woods at four in the morning with two rods and a small utility box.

And I'll be a kid again.

Yeah, I'll be young again.

But close behind in the #2 slot is to buy and learn how to use an FFS unit 😉 🤑

To quote Dale Brisby “bull riding is 90% mental, the rest is in your head.”😂

The same can be said for bass fishing.

I started fishing with @Fishing Rhino in 2014.  Tom's 81 now, is slowing down, and doesn't drive anymore.  He doesn't use a computer much anymore either.

He always offered me the co-angler spot on his Nitro so I R&R'd an old trailer he had on his property and use that to transport him and his canoe to his favorite local pond.  I put him in the front and take care of piloting, so he can get out and do what he loves.

I talk to him regularly and try to get him out fishing at least a few times a year.

I miss tom. He and I fished up my way a couple times, great guy. I speak to @redlinerobert and @fishchris, both doing well.

Got @Fishing Rhino’s Nitro up and running today after 3 years’ dormancy.  We cleaned the piles of tackle and ‘stuff’ it collected in his garage and I took it to his local shop so they could take care of a couple things he wanted done.

Hopefully I’ll get him out on it over the next couple weeks.

What's up gang?

My profile says that I have been here since 2004 but I would have to ask @Glenn if that takes into account when I was here on the old format message board. If I remember right, it was just a running message board without actual categories back then. I still remember when Glenn launched the big upgrade.

I just pop in very sporadically (mostly when it's cold here in Illinois) because I am always so busy being a chauffeur for my kids and getting told what to do by my wife. 😀

Today is another of those cold days and while watching the NCAA basketball tournament, I was thinking about my old friends from here and decided to pop in.

It does not take into account the old message board.  I wasn't able to import anything from the original message board.

I remember fishing with him when his Nitro was brand spanking new.  Great guy and he's missed around here.  Be sure to say hi to him from me personally as well as the gang here.

Tom picked me up in NJ and we traveled (and fished) together for the Roadtrip in the spanking new Triton. Got to hear many Maine lobsterman stories. Wonderful, generous fellow. I am also a an "old timer" joined in 2006. Got happily remarried in 2010 and life just got real busy. I still check in now & then, but I also miss some of the old timers. I'm finding more time these days to fish and build rods, etc. I will be around when I can.

This guy hasn't gotten out of the way for anyone, ask anyone who fishes Headwater's Lake lol. In fact, he's about as active as any young person could ever get, unbelievable energy for his age at 84, still steaming ahead at full speed! I know a lotta young'uns who'd be hard pressed to keep up with Roland's stamina.
