I've been here a minute or two. Just don't have much to add by the time I see most posts. I'm kinda surprised by how many of us joined in April of 2005. Sometimes seems like yesterday and other times a lifetime ago. Lol.

Another thing that surprises me but really shouldn't is that people don't know who Raul is/was.

He literally changed the way we talk/post.

He coined the term "bait monkey" as far as I know. He had a couple of others that are not as popular anymore. The Shimano posse and the dark side are two I remember.

@Catt is that muddys backside? Lol.

And I wonder how many of us won't be here in five or ten years. I guess all we can do is to enjoy and support each other for as long as we're here.

I also wonder this. I've been privileged enough to have lived a lot in a short amount of time. Life happens fast no matter how far you get.

Find a thread that's ten or so years old and read the names. Nearly all gone. The writing is on the wall for us here now. And when we disappear, one by one, there will be precious few explanations.

The I think this topic epitomizes the contributions of members of the BR community over the years I’ve been here. I do miss the comments and insights I’d enjoy reading of @Oregon Native (RIP), @Redlinerobert, @Raul, @lo n slo, @jbsoonerfan to name a few off the top of my head….

Yep, "Bait Monkey" started here at BassResource by Raul.  Fact.

This site is one of the oldest bass fishing sites there is, probably the longest running bass sites.

BassResource is the oldest bass fishing site in existence.  Established in 1996.  Also fact.  :)

Getting ancient is more difficult. Reduced circle of friends. Failing mind sections. Stage 4 diseases.

Oh well.     👍

I've been on this forum since 2009.  I was never that active with posting, and even less nowadays.  I will say I learned more about fishing on this site than anywhere else on the web.

There was another member from MA named Crestliner who was a wealth of knowledge and experience.  His posts were always to the point, and written with pure class.  I never contacted him directly and I'm not sure if he's still around, but it would have been an honor to cross paths with him somewhere on the water.  Will Wetline is another local name I remember.  A-Jay also gave me some guidance recently, and I'm thankful for that.  I remember most of the names mentioned in prior posts on this thread, and picked up some helpful hints from all of you.  Much appreciated.

I dont check on many forums any more because like the rest of social media its getting to be rehashed stuff over and over. Maybe others feel the same. Forums were the first true conversation outlet for any hobby. Now theyve lost steam but there might come a revival. Social media in its current form with FB, TikTok and others feels boring to me personally but thats where most of the conversation these days happens. Theres a FB group for everything under the sun. Back years ago, someone had to stand up a forum on a hosting provider to get it going. Now if you have an account you can create the same situation on FB and millions have. Reddit is chalked full too as is Discord. Too many outlets to have the conversations.

A gone know what happened to @bigbill?

I know he was selling off his bass fishing gear after he moved to the coast with family.

Started posting year in 2006 I think? Does that make me an old timer?

I started fishing with @Fishing Rhino in 2014.  Tom's 81 now, is slowing down, and doesn't drive anymore.  He doesn't use a computer much anymore either.

He always offered me the co-angler spot on his Nitro so I R&R'd an old trailer he had on his property and use that to transport him and his canoe to his favorite local pond.  I put him in the front and take care of piloting, so he can get out and do what he loves.

I talk to him regularly and try to get him out fishing at least a few times a year.

I lost a dear friend last year that I met through mountain biking that became a very good friend even outside of the sport. I still remember him proclaiming that "This won't last forever, so we should all appreciate these moments now."

I spend a fair amount of time each and every day contemplating my inevitable mortality. As time goes by, each day becomes more precious than the previous day. Father Time and Mother Nature are undefeated.

Great thread. I wonder if some folks will remember @Raul . I think he might still pop in but rarely post.

Update - I just looked at my profile and OMGoodness — I’ve been here since April 2005!!!!! 😱

So am I an old timer now? 😂

Raul is/was a good dude. A vet down in Mexico. We both loved mono, particularly Yozuri Hybrid (I still do) We would team up in threads like mono vs braid, mono vs fluorocarbon etc.. good times, good vibes.. familiar vibes..

Not true.  That little demon has been firmly attached to my back since the summer of 1977.  I might not have known his name, but he has always been there, and I consider him responsible for my tackle addiction, which started when a two pound bass blew up on my Jitterbug all those years ago.

I remember fishing with him when his Nitro was brand spanking new.  Great guy and he's missed around here.  Be sure to say hi to him from me personally as well as the gang here.

Been a long time since I posted last, but still read the forum on occasion.  Don't do much bass fishing since selling the boat many moons ago, and onslaught of numerous health issues.  Retirement wasn't for me and now work full time for a county government, and also have a part time job at home improvement center... for the exercise it provides.  Gonna try and do more fishing this year (but I say that every year in February).

I haven't been on this forum for that long, but I consider myself an old timer.  Like George, I grew up in South Florida. Started fishing with my grandfather sitting on the side of the Highway 27 canals.  My father didn't fish, but he found a Navy Chief from church that I could fish with.  We fished the old Everglades bombing range at night and all the canals we could find.   Charlie Infinger of Charlie's worms was a friend.  He caught dozens of 10 pound bass from the 84 canal.  He gave me one of the first worms he made to try out.  Today, his old fishing hole is an expressway.   My first bass club was the South Florida Tackle Testers in Ft. Lauderdale. My first B.A.S.S. Federation Tournament was in Welaka in the early 70s.  I was in my early 20s and met guys like Roland Martin, Bill Dance, Tom Mann and the Adams Brothers.  Fishing has been my passion for over 65 years. I still own a bass boat and fish when I can.   It gets harder each year, but I'm still at it.

I think it's worthwhile for younger people to know something of the history of bass fishing.  It wasn't always 250 HP motors, $100K boats and $600 reels.  Bass fishing was a poor man's sport. Something you could do without a lot of money.   It was passed down from fathers to sons and daughters. I do my best to let people know this.  I grew up this way and I believe I am better off because of it.

It was never about 250hp and 100K boats. It's fishing. 12 years ago I got flack, here and elsewhere, paying $50K for a boat. That's cheap by today's standards. The boat didn't make me a better fisherman. It did make the labor burden to fish, much easier. I'm in a $400 boat now. In the next year or 2, I'm planning to be in a 6 figure boat and it still won't make me a better fisherman. It's just fishing. The boat does not make the fisherman.

Pic is from a year ago this time. I'm hoping to take him out this weekend and this is what the sport is all about.
