Are Orange and Red Baits The Thing in the Spring ?

Featured Replies

I figured red must have some special attraction, all the Jackhammers I bought have a little dealy on them.  They all get bit but I’m missing all the bites.  I need to change rods or something.

  • On Toledo Bend red is a year round thing.   Watermelon red is better than watermelon anything.   Spinnerbaits with a red head will out produce all others.   Red bug, Plum

  • I caught this 40 inch Tiger Muskie last August on a red z-man chatterbait with a strike king rage tail menace trailer on my 4th cast.  It was overcast, muggy, and there was a storm coming in later tha

I've had a little luck with red and orange.

(Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange are the actual team colors)

I definitely have more success on other colors. Red is my least productive.

I hear that. I stay away from it so that I don’t become a head case about it.

In the back of my mind I know it is a good pattern. I just can’t bring it from my mind to the end of my line.

Orange in my patterns that’s a different story. Orange is not red.

I might just pull my red crankbaits and revisit them for awhile this spring.

They do work and I caught my personal best on a size #5 delta craw Shad rap last March.  However, for me I think it’s a situational when it is over cast and generally just crappy weather day  color.  Hopefully with a bigger boat I can test that theory more in less than ideal weather

Red bug, Plum, Plum Apple, Blue Fleck, & other reds are deadly.

It's year round here too, but not many people notice, and that's fine with me.

Gold is another really good prespawn color.

This post could go into other topics as well.

Popular lures that don't work well for you: I've tried many hours fishing chatterbaits, finally got this guy.
(I know, I know)
What trailer to use on firecraw jackhammers: This had a falcon lake colored rage menace.
Red and Orange Lures work? Yes, this 4lber liked it quite well.

I always wonder if red works in the north,or is it a southern thing? I don't see a lot of guys throwing it here,in Wisconsin.

Well I'm at the 45th parallel ~

So on a line that's North of Toronto but south of Ottawa;

Sort of in the middle but in northern Michigan.

The brown bass here eat red/orange for me on occasion.

Red is visible to bass but disappears quickly in low light then appearing black. I can see it being attractive in shallow clear water where bass congregate in spring.

Do you find yourself actually throwing all those different variations of a lipless crank?

Just picked this up to try.

Can't speak for @A-Jay, but of the 18 different models/colors of lipless currently in my tackle box, I throw every one of them. Some definitely see more action than others, but all get used.

I've added two Fire Craw Original Chatterbaits and some matching Rage Menaces and Z-Man Paddlerz.  I've also got some Strike King Red Eye Shads ready to go in Delta Red for pre-fishing for my second tournament of the year.

I've never built any confidence in red, but maybe this year will be different.  I'm gonna give them a good go this coming Saturday, but if they're not slapping it's gonna be back to the Jackall Rerange and SK KVD Deep on tourney day.

I have a couple of orange/red lures and use them fairly regularly, but I don't necessarily use them just in the spring.

In who's world is early February considered "early spring?"  Maybe down in Central America or Mexico.  Its definitely still winter here in the lower 48.

Why yeah! Wouldn't wanna hurt someone's feelings by not throwing their product.

Wasn’t that long ago everyone was on the “bass can’t see red” band wagon, guess that went off the cliff.

Dark red/black deep diving crank baits are good night and day year around everywhere I tried them including Mexico and Canada. The Delta it’s a must color combo.

Orange; black and orange diving lures are good in the afternoon sometimes. Bone surface lures with orange belly and Bomber 6” Long A CHO orange belly is a killer in the spring.

Jigs... barn red pork trailer on anywhere anytime ( Black-purple-red/brown) hair jigs during pre spawn, my go to colors.
